Have You Seen MyPlate? choosemyplate.gov
for online personal wellness resources for you and your family.
On June 2nd, the Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack, and the
First Lady, Michelle Obama, unveiled a new replacement for the
food pyramid: a meal plate known as MyPlate.
The plate is based on new dietary guidelines released by the government last January, which
encourage Americans to eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and fewer processed
foods, especially ones containing added sugar. It is part of a concerted effort by the Department
of Agriculture and the First Lady to improve nutrition, especially among children.
Balancing Calories
• Enjoy your food, but eat less.
• Avoid oversized portions.
Foods to Increase
• Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
• Make at least half your grains whole grains.
• Switch to fat-free or low-fat (1%) milk.
Parents can replenish lunch accounts by check(made out to "PRS") or cash, by mail to your child school att. cafeteria or sent in via student.
Parents may also specify how they want their monies are spent
as an example: if you send in $20.00. You can specify $15 be used for lunches only and $5.00 be allotted for seconds or Ala carte items.
Just specify on the front of the envelope. Please put you child/children name in the memo on the check and on the front of the envelope.
Be sure to select the most for your money:
a complete lunch consists of a grain/bread, meat or meat alternate, vegetable, fruit and milk
BE SURE TO REVIEW THE MENU WITH YOUR CHILD. THIS WILL GIVE YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO MAKE THE HEALTHY CHOICES THAT BEST SUIT YOUR FAMILY. REMEMBER TO ENCOURAGE THEM TO TAKE A FRUIT AND VEGETABLE EVERY DAY. IF THEY DO NOT LIKE THE HOT VEGETABLE OR FRUIT OFFERING OF THE DAY THEY MAY STILL CHOOSE FROM THE FRESH CUPPED VEGETABLES AS WELL AS ANY FRUIT OFFERED IN OUR FRUIT BASKET DAILY.
