Community House to honor 11 Generation One Princeton High School Seniors
PRINCETON, N.J. -- Community House, a community-service organization at Princeton University committed to helping people in need in Princeton Borough and Township, will hold a special ceremony on Thursday, May 17, to celebrate the accomplishments of 11 Princeton High School seniors who are the first graduates of a program designed to encourage Princeton High students who would be the first in their families to pursue college or other post-secondary education. They will graduate from Princeton High School next month and are finalizing plans to pursue post-secondary education at institutions including George Washington University, the Chubb Institute, McDaniel College, St. Peter’s College, and Wellesley College.
Members of the community and the local media are invited to attend the celebration.
The Generation One program was started four years ago as a partnership between Princeton University, Princeton Regional School’s Guidance Department, Princeton Regional School’s Minority Education Committee, and Peterson’s, the college guide and test preparation course publisher and provider of financial aid information. Its main objective is to level the playing field for students whose parents did not attend college. Students in Gen 1, as the program is familiarly referred to by its members, participate in weekly after-school activities organized by school counselors and Princeton University undergraduate student mentors. They receive help with homework and test preparation, go on college campus visits and field trips, and find out about how to apply and obtain financial aid for post-secondary education.
The May 17 celebration in the Carl A. Fields Center Liberation Hall, 86 Olden St., will include a pot luck dinner at 6 p.m., followed by a presentation by Associate Professor of Politics and Africa American Studies Melissa Harris-Lacewell. The evening will conclude with a graduation ceremony. Princeton Regional Schools Board of Education members, administration and staff, Generation One students and families, members of the community and the local media are all invited. Pre-registration is requested. For more information or to register, contact Marjorie Young at Community House, (609) 258-6136.
