Stony Brook School
If you have any additional information, please send e-mail to www@prs.k12.nj.us.
The original Stony Brook School was first mentioned in the minutes of the Board of Education of West Windsor in 1848. It was a one-room schoolhouse which educated grades 1 through 8. Around 1890 it was one of three one-room rural school houses operated by Princeton Township with a central Board of Education. Between 1922 and 1923, the cloakroom was converted into a second school room for grades 6, 7, and 8.
Most of the children came from local farms and the normal day started off with a reading from the Bible, the salute to the flag, and some hymns. (These continued until the courts made the separation of church and State more clear.) Towards mid-day, students would play outdoors with the chickens from the neighbor's house and if water was needed, a student would be sent with a pail next door, as there was no running water.
The original Stony Brook School was replaced in 1929 by a new Stony Brook School. At that time, it was moved to Spruce St. and converted into a house.
