Non-Public School Services

Parentally placed students with disabilties in nonpublic schools are provided state funded (Chapter 193) speech-language services, supplemental instruction, counseling services , paraprofessioinal assistance for inclusion students, and consultation services through the district in which the nonpublic school is located (host district).  Nonpublic school students with disabilities may also receive services through their district of residence, which is required to spend a proportionate share of its federal special education funds for services to students with disabilities enrolled in nonpublic schools.  Nonpublic school students are evaluated and determined eligible through the host district (or a provider agency under contract with the host district).

Each parentally placed nonpublic school student with disabilities must have a services plan.  The services plan describes the specific special education or related services that the LEA will provide to the chid.  The LEA must ensure that a representative of the private school attends each meeting to develop the services plan and, if the representative cannot attend, use other methods to ensure participation by the private school, including individual or conference telephone calls.  This provides the opportunity for private school staff to learn more about the child's strengths and needs.
