SPEECH AND LANGUAGE SERVICES

Speech-language services in Princeton Regional Schools are provided in and/or out of the classroom. Students are seen individually and/or in small groups to address speech language issues that impact on a student's academic learning and/or performance. The speech-language specialist consults and collaborates with the general education and special education teachers regarding students' individual programs, modifying the language of the classroom to meet the needs of those students. Most of the speech-language specialist's time is spent in direct services with students. In addition, time is spent screening, evaluating to determine eligibility for services or Child Study Team classification, consulting with parents and attending CST/IEP meetings.

Well developed auditory-perceptual and language skills are valid prognosticators of school success. Classrooms are auditory-verbal environments where students must hear, attend to and process oral language. The future role of the speech-language specialist reflects a paradigm shift to meet the language needs of a diverse and complex population. Specific alterations to service delivery within the parameters outlined in the current job description are being proposed. These changes are designed to include but are not be limited to an in class program for K and lst grade students. These lessons would be designed to develop phonemic awareness and the skills necessary to process auditory information.
