Senior Scholarship Winners from FLENJ!

Four PHS seniors will receive $1,000 scholarships from the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey (FLENJ). Emefa Agawu, Talya Nakash and Siya Bhatt participated in Spanish and Mariana Irby in French. This is an annual, statewide competition for which students write an essay to a prompt and then the semifinalists have a telephone conversation with a member of FLENJ. FLENJ awards seven scholarships each year. The organization will honor the students and their parents at a breakfast on March 19. Congratulations to all four young ladies!

                                                        Princeton High School named a Confucius Classroom

Hanban and the Asia Society have just named Princeton High School's Mandarin program a Confucius Classroom in recognition of its strength and high quality. This is a three year appointment that comes with funding for professional development, the purchasing of materials and salary funding for expanding programs. Additionally, Shwu-fen Lin is a member of the Asia Society team charged with creating a national K-12 Chinese curriculum.

                        Japan Foundation recognizes and supports Princeton High School Japanese program

During the 2010 - 11 school year the Japan Foundation recognized our Japanese program with funding for salaries and for the purchase of materials. This is an honor for our program and our teacher Natsuko Buurstra. The Princeton Regional Schools is extremely grateful for this support from the Japan Foundation. It has also enabled our students to take some field trips and to participate in some national exams. Thank you, Japan Foundation!

                                                        New Jersey Model Program designation 2010-2012

Once again Princeton was the only 2-12 program designated a Model Program Resource Center in World Languages for the state of New Jersey. We will continue to welcome teachers and administrators from around the state and the country to our classes.

FLENJ honors four seniors

The Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey have awarded scholarships to four Princeton seniors for their outstanding proficiency in French or Spanish.Izzy Kasdin, Alicia Fenley, and Carol Weiss were winners in Spanish and Clare Joyce in French. This is an annual statewide competition and this year PHS students were nine of the twenty semi-finalists. FLENJ will honor the four finalists at a breakfast on April 10.

Japanese students honored

        Athena Wu and Kate McMahan received awards for their outstanding achievement at the New Jersey Association of  Japanese Teachers Awards Ceremony at Seton Hall University on March 5. They, their parents, and their sensei, Natsuko Buurstra, attended the ceremony and then participated in a day of cultural activities.

JW French department steps up to help Haiti

Cob Powlen, 7th grade French teacher, spearheaded the bake sale that raised $2,500 for Haiti. All French students chipped in to bake and bring in business for the after school sale. Thanks to all who made this a resounding success.
A few weeks later the entire JW world languages department and all the JW students held the Raymond Hunt Scholarship bake sale. Held annually for the past 18 years, this bake sale raises funds to support two scholarships given to graduating seniors who studied French or Spanish at John Witherspoon. Regena Tardugno coordinated this effort that raised $1200 for the fund.

CONGRATULATIONS TO PRISCILLA RUSSEL, NADSFL SUPERVISOR OF THE YEAR!                   November, 2009

Priscilla received the prestigious Pearson Prentice Hall Award for National  Supervisor of the Year.  This honor is awarded annually by NADSFL, the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Languages.  This annual award goes to one supervisor in the country based on outstanding service to the profession at the local,state, regional and national levels. This award recognizes Priscilla’s hard work and dedication in the district, her involvement and leadership in national and state organizations and her accomplishments and publications in the field of language teaching.  NADSFL has recognized the difference that Priscilla has made in the district as well as throughout the state and nation. She will serve in this capacity until November 2010.

Earlier this year, Priscilla received the supervisor of the year award  from FLENJ, the Foreign Language Educators of NewJersey.  

Congratulations to Priscilla on quite a year!

French II class welcomes speaker from Senegal

Mrs. Janelle Wilkinson's French  class welcomed Princeton University graduate student Rose Ndong to their class. Ms. Ndong  who is studying chemical engineering  came to talk with the class about her life in Senegal. Her visit was the highlight of the class unit on Senegal.


State Supervisor of the Year

Priscilla Russel received the 2009 Supervisor of the Year Award from the Foreign Language Educators of New Jersey, NJ Supervisors of World Languages.  This award is in recognition of all her work and dedication in the district and her contribution to the field of language education at the state and national level, as well as recognizing that PRS has the only K-12 model World Language program in NJ!

Four of our World Languages teachers had articles published in the Fall 2006 edition of Learning Languages - The Journal of the National Network for Early Language Learning.

Eugenia Porello, Spanish teacher for eighth graders at John Witherspoon Middle School, wrote an article focused on assessment tips in thematic units.

Mark Eastburn, World Languages teacher for grades 3-5 at Johnson Park Elementary School, wrote an article on the performance-based assessment technique he has implemented at Johnson Park.
Sarah Hibbert and Patricia Morales contributed an article to the journal on the power of thematic units.

World Languages Supervisor, Priscilla Russel, nationally known for using folktales to teach language, published the article Folktales: weaving language and culture together in the spring 2006 edition of Learning Languages - The Journal of the National Network for Early Language Learning.
